Sterile Compounding Study Guide for Quiz

Ampule Small, hermetically sealed container with a distant, elongated neck. (usually made of glass) 1mL-20mL
Ampule Drug PH Acidic PH value, high osmotic pressure, or a high tonicity (hypertonic)
Ampule Risks Potential for patient to be exposed of glass shards.
Ampule Body Largest component of the ampule and portion that contains the medication
Ampule Shoulder Uppermost part of the body; just before the container starts to narrow
Ampule Head Small glass bulb located above the neck
Filter Needle To filter out any glass shards or other contaminating components in the fluid; only used either to withdraw fluid from the ampule or inject it, cannot be used to do both at the same time, it's single direction only.
Filter Straw Only used to withdraw a large amount of fluid more than 5mL from an ampule.
Filter Disc A round disc containing a filter, it has a syringe adapter and needle adapter; cannot be used to withdraw liquid, only to "filter out"

Ampule Purpose A lot of the medicine in ampules are incompatible with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) components of a vial stopper.
