SCAT Ch10

Sterile Compounding Study Guide for Quiz

TermDefinition
Intracellular Spaces Water is primarily found within the cells of the body. (inside cells)
Interstitial Spaces Water found in the spaces between the cells
Extracellular Spaces Water found outside of the cells
Homeostasis Maintaining a proper fluid and electrolyte balance within the body
Dehydration The amount of water entering the body is less than the amount of water leaving the body
PH value The degree of alkalinity or acidity of the fluid measured on a scale from zero.
PH acid less than 7.0
PH alkaline more than 7.0
PH neutral equal to 7.0
Human PH blood value 7.4
(D5W, LR, NS) PH Value 3.5-6.2
Osmolarity Measure of the number of milliosmoles of solute per liter of solution. (mOsmo/L)
Osmotic Pressure Pressure required to maintain equilibrium within the cells.
Osmolality Measure of the number of milliosmoles of solute per kilogram of solvent (mOsm/kg)
Isoomotic Same osmotic pressure as human blood plasma and dissolves particles.
Tonicity The response of cells or tissues to surrounding fluid
Hypertonic Conditions Cell shrivels (shrinks), contains a greater number of dissolved particles than human blood particles. (for long-term IV nutrition)
Hypotonic Conditions Cell bursts (explodes + swells) contains fewer dissolved particles than human blood plasma. (1/4 NS, for patients who experience diuresis, more urine output than normal)
Isotonic Conditions Cell healthy/normal, contains a number of dissolves particles equivalent to human blood plasma. Provides hydration and electrolyte replacement for hospitalized patients. (normal IVs)
LVPs Large-Volume Preparations, sterile parenteral solutions of at least 100ML, but generally 250ML or greater.
Continuous Infusion Typically consists of a base solution with additives such as electrolytes or multi-vitamins, used for: replacement infusion, hydration replacement, and maintenance infusion.
Drip A solution is comprised an IV base solution with medication that has been injected into the solution for the treatment of a specific condition. (heparin, aminophylline, dopamine, debutamine, nitroglycerin, nitroprusiside, amiodarone, and insulin) titrated
Milking Technique Add positive pressure to the closed system by injecting into the vial an amount of air that is equal to, or slightly les than, the volume of liquid to be withdrawn from the vial.
Vial Closed-system container

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
