terms and definitions

TermDefinition
Osteocyte A mature bone cell that maintains the bone matrix.
Osteoblast A cell responsible for forming new bone tissue.
Osteoclast A cell that breaks down and absorbs bone tissue.
Periosteum The outer covering of bone that contains nerves and blood vessels.
Epiphysis The end part of a long bone that contains spongy bone and red marrow.
Diaphysis The shaft of a long bone made mostly of compact bone.
Medullary cavity The hollow region inside the diaphysis that contains yellow bone marrow.
Articulation A joint; where two bones meet
Foramen An opening in a bone that allows nerves and blood vessels to pass through.
Condyle A rounded projection on a bone that helps form a joint.
Fontanelle The soft spot on a baby’s skull where bones haven’t yet fused.
Vertebrae The small bones that make up the vertebral column (spine).
Clavicle The collarbone; connects the sternum to the shoulder.
Scapula The shoulder blade; connects the humerus with the clavicle.
Patella The kneecap; a sesamoid bone that protects the knee joint.
Pelvis A bony structure composed of the hip bones, sacrum, and coccyx.
Radius and Ulna The two bones of the forearm; the radius is on the thumb side, the ulna on the pinky side
Tibia and Fibula The two bones of the lower leg; the tibia is the larger, weight-bearing bone.
Coccyx The tailbone; the final segment of the vertebral column.
