Work, Force and Moti

TermDefinition
Work Force placed on an object that causes it to move.
Force A push or a pull
Motion The result of unbalanced forces being applied to an object. A change in position relative to a reference point.
mass A measure of the amount of matter in an object
weight A measure of the force of gravity on an object
gravity A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.
inertia An objects resistance to change its motion
Newton's First Law of Motion an object in motion will remain in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by another force. Also called the LAW OF INERTIA!
Newton's Second Law of Motion The greater the mass, the smaller the acceleration for a given force. Force is the product of mass and acceleration. Also called the LAW OF ACCELERATION!
Newton's Third Law of Motion for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
speed Distance traveled per unit time.
velocity Speed in a given direction
acceleration Any change in velocity (increasing speed, decreasing speed or changing directions)
deceleration A decrease in speed. Also called negative acceleration.
energy Ability to do work
friction A force that resists motion
Simple machines a machine with few moving parts, making it easier to do work (there are 6: lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, and screw)
pulley A grooved wheel with a rope, chain, or cable running along the groove. Works by changing the direction of the force.
inclined plane A flat surface set at an angle used to help raise or lower objects.
wedge A device that is thick at one end and has a thin edge at the other end. Often used to split objects apart.
screw An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. Used for holding things together or lifting objects.
wheel and axle A large wheel with a rod through its center. Reduces the friction of moving something.
distance A measure of far something has moved.
Joule The SI unit of measurement for Work
machine device that makes work easier by increasing the force applied to an object, by changing the direction of an applied force, or by increasing the distance over which a force can be applied.
Power Amount of work being done, or the amount of energy transferred, in a certain amount of time, measured in watts, W.
Balanced forces Equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions. Net force equals zero. Results in no movement occurring.
unbalanced forces Forces acting on an object that combine and form a net force that is not zero. Results in movement occurring.
lever A rigid bar that is free to move around a fixed point. Used to lift objects
Newtons The SI unit of measurement for Force
Watts The SI unit of measurement for Power

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
