TermDefinition
lesion destroy/destruction of
* neuroscientists can stimulate various body parts + see where info goes
optogenetics uses light to control individual neurons
EEG (electroencephalogram) readout of the waves of electrical activity in brain - presents stimulus repeatedly and monitor activity unrelated
MEG (magnetoencephalography) measures magnetic fields from brains natural electrical activity
CT (computed tomography) examines brain by taking x-ray pictures to reveal brain damage
PET (position emission tomography) picks up brain activity by showing consumption levels of sugar glucose by each brain part
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) disorientation of atoms of brain molecules that go back to place and emit signals that provide images of soft tissue including the brain
ventricles fluid filled brain areas
fMRI reveal brain functioning + structure - specific areas activate by increase of oxygen-laded blood flow
default network web of brain regions - supports mind wandering and daydreaming
diffusion spectrum imagining type of MRI that draws out long-distance brain fiber connection
brain stem oldest and innermost region
medulla control for heartbeat and breathing
pons coordinate movement and sleep
thalamus acts as brain sensory control center - receives all info but smell - sometimes takes the higher replies and directs to medulla nad cerebellum
reticular (network) formation neuron network - sensory imput flows to thalamus and sometimes travels here, filtering stimuli and relays important info to other brain areas
cerebellum enables nonverbal learning and memory skins + judge time, and modulating emotions and textures/sounds - "little brain"
cerebral hemisphere two halves of brain
limbic system contains amygdala, hypothalamus and hippocampus - emotions and memories
amygdala aggression and fear link - not the only part responsible
hypothalamus below thalamus, governs body maintenance - influence hunger + regular thirst, body temp and sexual behavior - tunes in blood chem and orders from other parts of brain - provides pleasurable rewards
reward deficiency syndrom crave whatever provides missing pleasure
hippocampus processes conscious, explicit memories - decreases in size/function with age - does NOT store memories!

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
