humidity

QuestionAnswer
what does a higher dewpoint indicate? more absolute humidity (more water vapor in the air)
what happens to the diurnal temperature cycle when precipitation occurs? it stops or flattens
what causes water molecules to escape from the liquid layer into the air? higher temperature increases molecular speed, leading to more escape
what causes vapor molecules to return to the liquid layer? higher vapor content increases collisions, leading to more return
what is the condition when return < escape? evaporation (sub-saturated air)
what is the condition when return > escape? condensation (super-saturatred)
what is the condition when return = escape? saturation
what is relative humidity (RH)? the ratio of actual vapor pressure to saturation vapor pressure, expressed as a percentage
what does RH = 100% mean? the air is saturated
what does RH < 100% mean? the air is sub-saturated (evaporation occurs)
what does RH > 100% mean? the air is super-saturated (condensation)
how are RH and temperature related? inversely - higher temperature lowers RH, and lower temperature raises RH
what does dew point tell us about the atmosphere? it shows how much the air must cool to reach saturation and reflects absolute humidity
can dewpoint ever be higher than air temperature? no, Td <= T always
what is the boiling point of water in Denver (850 mb)? 95°C (203°F), lower due to reduced atmospheric pressure
what does the heat index measure? apparent temperature, combining air temperature and RH
what two ways can RH be changed? by changing vapor content or changing temperature (saturation point)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
