Unit 1 - Sci Inquiry

TermDefinition
Observation information gathered using the five senses
Qualitative Observation (QL) (Definition) an observation that describes an object with words
Qualitative Observation (QL) (Examples) color, taste, texture
Quantitative Observation (QT) (Definition) an observation that uses measurements to describe an object
Quantitative Observation (QT) (Example) a temperture of 5 degrees Celcuis, My house is 5 miles from the school.
Inference an interpertation from observations
Scientific Method (Definition) a series of steps used to solve a problem
Scientific Method (Steps) 1. Identify the problem 2. Make a hypothesis 3. Experiment (collect data) 4. Draw conclusions 5. Communicate results
Controlled Experiment an experiment where only one variable is changed and all others remain constant
Independent Variable (IV) the variable that is changed by the scientist
Dependant Variable (DV) the variable that reponds to the change, what is being measured
Hypothesis an educated guess about the solution to a problem
Control Group This is what would naturally occur, used to compare your data too
Experiment organized process used to test a hypothesis
Conclusion a claim based on the results of an experiment
Data Observations and measurements recoreded during an experiment
The metric system a uniform system of measurement which allows for easy comparison of data
Length - definition - instrument - unit - the distance between two points - ruler - meters (m)
Volume of a Regularly Shaped Object - definition - instrument - unit - the amount of space an object takes up - ruler - cm *3
Volume of an Irregularly Shaped Object - definition - instrument - unit - the amount of space an object takes up - graduated cylinder - mL
Water displacement method This is when you fill a graduated cylinder and record the measurement (old), then slide the object in and record the new measurement. Lastly you subtract New - Old to get the volume of just the object.
Mass - definition - instrument - unit - the amount of matter in an object - scale - grams
Weight (Definition) the force of gravity pulling on an object
Density (Definition) the concentration of matter in an object
Explain why some materials float in water A material with a density less than the density of water will float (less than 1 gram/cm*3)
Explain why some materials sink in water A material with a density more than the density of water will sink (more than 1 gram/cm*3)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
