Force and Motion
Force and Motion Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Newton's First Law of Motion | "Law of Inertia". Objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Objects at rest stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. |
| Newton's Second Law of Motion | "Law of Acceleration". Acceleration depends on force and mass. MORE MASS-MORE ACCELERATION (f=ma) |
| Newton's Third Law of Motion | "Action-Reaction Law". For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Forces come in pairs. |
| Momentum | Measurement of how difficult it is to stop a moving object. MORE MASS-MORE MOMENTUM, MORE VELOCITY-MORE MOMENTUM |
| Force | A push or pull on something. Examples: friction, gravity, push/pull, magnetism |
| Net Force | Combination of all forces acting upon an object. Will accelerate in direction of net force |
| Unbalanced Force | Forces DO NOT cancel each other out. Acceleration happens in direction of the net force. |
| Balance Force | Forces cancel each other out. NO MOVEMENT. =0N |
| Inertia | Object's resistance to having it's position changed. MORE MASS=MORE INERTIA |
| Collision | Force is transferred between 2 colliding objects |
| Friction | when two surfaces rub against each other. It acts in the opposite direction of motion, slowing things down or making them harder to move |
| Gravity | Force of Attraction between 2 objects with mass. MORE MASS-MORE GRAVITY, CLOSER OBJECTS-MORE GRAVITY |
| Positive Acceleration | Positive number with positive slope on velocity-time graph |
| Negative Acceleration (Deceleration) | Negative number with negative slope on velocity-time graph |
| Frame of Reference | Change of background. How we know if something has moved! |
| Mass | The amount of matter present in something. Measured in grams (g)/kilograms (kg). |
| Newton | Unit of Force (N) |
| Law of Conservation of Momentum | Momentum cannot be lost or gained, only transferred between 2 objects. |
| Speed | How fast something is moving (m/s) |
| Velocity | Describes both speed AND direction of motion. |
| Weight | Influenced by gravity, measured in Newtons (N) |
| Acceleration | Change in velocity's rate measured in (m/s^2) |
| Matter | Anything with mass and volume |
