| Group | a vertical column on the periodic table, where elements share similar chemical properties and the same number of valence electrons |
| Period | a horizontal row of elements on the periodic table, where the elements in a period have the same number of electron shells, or energy levels |
| Atomic Number | the unique number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the element's identity and position on the periodic table. |
