Academic Vocabulary Used in the Short Story "Young Goodman Brown"

| Theme | the central, unifying idea, message, or insight about life that a story conveys |
| Imagery | the use of descriptive language that appeals to the reader's five senses to create vivid mental pictures helping readers to immerse themselves in the story |
| Tone | the author's or narrator's attitude toward the subject matter, audience, or characters, conveyed through their word choice, sentence structure, and style |
| Allusion | a brief, indirect reference to a person, place, thing, or idea of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance, relying on the audience's prior knowledge to convey meaning |
| Motif | a recurring element—such as an object, image, sound, action, or abstract idea—that repeats throughout a story to help develop and emphasize the work's larger themes and messages |
| Mood | the overall feeling or atmosphere that a literary work creates for the reader, evoking a particular emotional response such as joy, sadness, or fear |
