TermDefinition
Organism A living thing.
Cell The basic unit of structure and function in living things.
Unicellular Made of a single cell.
Multicellular Consisting of many cells.
Stimulus Any change or signal in the environment that can make an organism react in some way.
Response An action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus.
Spontaneous Generation The mistaken idea that living things arise from nonliving things.
Homeostasis The condition in which an organism’s internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in its surrounding environment.
Species A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce.
Classification The process of grouping things based on their similarities.
Genus A taxonomic category that names a group of similar, closely-related organisms.
Taxonomy The scientific study of how living things are classified.
Evolution A change in a species over time.
Virus A tiny, nonliving particle that enters and then reproduces inside a living cell.
Host An organism that provides a source of energy or a suitable environment for a parasite
Bacteria Single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus; prokaryotes.
Protist A eukaryotic organism that cannot be classified as an animal, plant, or fungus.
Parasite An organism that benefits by living with, on, or in a host.
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function.
Vertebrates An animal with a backbone.
Invertebrates An animal without a backbone
Organ A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together.
Mammals A vertebrate whose body temperature is regulated by its internal heat, and that has skin covered with hair or fur and glands that produce milk to feed its young.
