Definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Settlement | The area in which people settled |
| Site of settlement | The specific location in which people built settlements |
| Antiquity | An item on an OS map that is historic in nature |
| Castle | Built by the Normans for defence |
| Round Tower | Built by Christian monks to store goods and valuables |
| Altitude | The area above sea level. The higher you go the colder it gets |
| Aspect | The direction in which a slope faces. |
| Urbanisation | The process in which cities get bigger and bigger. |
| Urban Sprawl | The process in which cities spread into agricultural farmland. |
| Urban Decay | The process in which inner city buildings or areas fall into disrepair, characterised by boarded up buildings and graffiti |
| Urban Redevelopment | The process in which an area undergoes devevlopment. An example of this is Dublin Docklands or Ballymun Flats |
| Ogham Stone | A large rock where the Celts carved writing into it. |
| Fulacht Fia | An ancient method of cooking for meat. |
| Linear settlement | Settlements that occur along roads. |
| Dispersed Settlement | Settlements that are spread apart from one another. |
| Clustered Settlement | Settlement that develops at crossroads. |
