Grammar terms and concepts

TermDefinition
noun a word or word group that is used to name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea.
compound noun made up of two or more words used together as a single noun
abstract noun names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic.
collective noun a word that names a group
personal pronoun a pronoun that refers to the one speaking (1st person), the one spoken to (2nd person), or the one spoken about (3rd person).
reflexive pronoun a pronoun that ends in self/selves; refers to the subject and plays an important role in the sentence
intensive pronoun a pronoun that ends in self/selves; emphasizes a noun or another pronoun.
demonstrative pronoun a pronoun that points out a person, a place, a thing, or an idea.
interrogative pronoun a pronoun that introduces a question.
relative pronoun a pronoun that introduces a dependent clause.
indefinite pronoun a pronoun that refers to non-specific persons, places, or things.
adjective a word used to modify or describe a noun or a pronoun.
action verb expresses either physical or mental activity
linking verb connects the subject to a word or word group that identifies or describes the subjects
transitive verb a verb that expresses an action directed toward a person, place, thing, or idea.
intransitive verb expresses action without passing it to a receiver.
adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb; tells where, when, how, or to what extent
preposition a word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word.
conjunction a word used to join words or groups of words
interjection a word used to express emotion
