Mixtures
| Term | Definition |

| mixture | A combination of two or more substances that can be separated based on their observable properties. |
| solid | A state of matter with a definite shape and a definite volume. |
| particle size | How big or small a piece of matter is. |
| shape | How an object is laid out in space; its form. |
| color | A physical property that describes the light reflected back to us that we can see. |
| magnet | A tool used to attract objects made of iron and certain other metals. |
| filter | A tool used to separate solids from liquids. |
| dissolve | To break down or mix so thoroughly that you can no longer see the substance. |
| sugar | A sweet crystalline substance. |
| salt | A white crystalline substance that can be found in seawater. |
| sand | A granular substance formed as a result of weathered and eroded rocks. |
| flour | A powder obtained by grinding wheat, often used to bake bread. |
| magnetic attraction | A noncontact force between a magnet and certain metal objects such as iron. |
| surface area | The measurement of all the space on the outside of an object. |
| temperature | The measure of how hot or cold a substance is. |
| filtration | The process by which particles are removed from a liquid. |
| forceps | An instrument for grasping, holding, or picking up small items. |
| sieve | A tool with mesh or holes used to separate small particles from larger ones. |
| evaporate | The process of changing from a liquid to a gas (vapor). |
| gravel | A mixture of small stones, pebbles, and sometimes sand. |
