QuestionAnswer
What is a symbol? A shorthand way of writing the name of an element.
What is a proton? Located in the nucleus, this component of an atom has a positive charge and it worth 1 A.M.U.
What is an A.M.U? Atomic Mass Unit.
What is a neutron? Located in the nucleus, this component of an atom has no charge. It's also called "neutral". Its mass is the same as a proton.
What is an electron? This component of an atom is located in the outer level of the atom. It creates the "electron cloud". It has a negative charge (-1). It has no mass.
What is a quark? Quarks are what makes up the protons and neutrons in an atom. There are 6 quarks in an atom.
What is the atomic number? The number of protons. The number of protons and electrons are the same.
Who invented the periodic table? Dmitri Mendeleev.
How many columns/groups are there? 18.
How many families are on the periodic table? 8.
What about the other 10 columns? Transitional elements are not included.
What are valence electrons? The outermost electrons of an atom, which are important in determining how the atom reacts chemically with other atoms
What is an isotope? Different types of atoms of the same chemical element, each having a different number of neutrons.
