| Physical properties | A characteristic of a substance that can be measured or observed. Use your five senses. |
| Matter | Anything that takes up space |
| Solid | Has a definite shape and volume, tightly packed together, does not flow easily and cannot be poured from one container to another. |
| Liquid | Does not have a definite shape but does have a definite volume. Changes to the shape of its container, flows easily and can be poured filling the bottom of the container first. |
| Gas | Does not have a definite shape or volume, flows easily from one place to another, particles not tightly packed and expands freely to fill any space available. |
| Density | The amount of molecules in matter that allows it to sink or float. |
| Homogeneous Mixture | a blend of substances that are so thoroughly mixed that they appear as a single substance, with a uniform composition and properties throughout (e.g. a solution). They are hard to separate. |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | a physical blend of two or more substances where the composition and properties are not uniform throughout, and the components are visually distinguishable. Mixture is easily separated. |
| Pure Substance | matter with a uniform and definite composition, meaning it consists of only one type of element or compound, which has a fixed set of properties. Cannot be separated. |
| Soluble | Able to dissolve in liquid |
