Pure Substances, Solutions, and Mixtures

| element | a substance made of only one type of atom |
| ratio | a relationship between two or more elements that shows how much of one element there is compared to another |
| heterogeneous mixture | a mixture that does not have a uniform composition |
| homogeneous mixture | a mixture that has a uniform composition; it's also known as a solution |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical property | any characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without a change in its chemical composition |
| pure substance | matter made of only one type of particle; an element or a compound |
| solution | a mixture that has a uniform composition; it's also known as a homogeneous mixture |
