scientific method vocabulary

| inference | is a logical interpretation based on what scientist already know |
| hypothesis | is a tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation |
| controlled experiment | all other variables should be kept or unchanged, or controlled |
| independent variables | the variable deliberately changed |
| dependent variable | the variable that i s observed and that changes in response to the independent variable is called the |
| control group | is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes in the independent variable |
| data | numbers obtained by counting or measuring |
| scientific theory | a well-tested explanation for experimental results |
| scientific law | this describes an observation pattern in nature |
| experimental group | this group shows the effect of the variable being tested |
| scientific inquiry | the many ways in which scientists study the natural world |
