| Term | Definition |

| Mass | The amount of matter in an object. |
| Weight | A measure of the pull of gravity on an object's mass. |
| Conservation of Matter | Matter cannot be created or destroyed; it only changes form. |
| Closed System | A setup where nothing enters or leaves, so matter is conserved. |
| Substance | A type of matter with the same properties throughout. |
| Dissolve | When a substance seems to disappear into a liquid but is still present. |
| Physical Change | A change in size, shape, or state that does not make a new substance. |
| Evaporation | A liquid changing to a gas. |
| Melting | A solid changing to a liquid. |
| Freezing | A liquid changing to a solid. |
| Compare | To find similarities and differences. |
| Evidence | Proof or data that supports a claim. |
| Properties | Characteristics or traits of matter such as color, texture, or hardness. |
| Interaction | What happens when substances act together. |
| Cause and Effect | A relationship where one event makes another happen. |
| Total / Combined / Altogether | Words in math or science problems that signal adding masses together. |
| Remain / Left Over | Words that signal conservation — matter stays the same. |
| Destroyed / Created / Lost / Gained | Distractor words that are almost always wrong in conservation questions. |
