Properties of Matter Vocab

TermDefinition
color A physical property that describes the light reflected back to us that we can see.
odor A physical property that describes how something smells.
taste A physical property that describes how something tastes.
texture A physical property that describes how something feels.
hardness A physical property that describes how easily something can be scratched.
temperature A physical property that measures how much heat energy molecules have.
mass A physical property that describes how much matter an object has.
volume A physical property that describes how much space an object takes up.
grams A unit of measurement that can be used to describe how much matter an object has.
properties A characteristic that can be observed using the five senses.
classify To arrange in a specific order or to group by categories based on similarities.
repel A force that causes objects to move away or apart from one another.
celcius A metric unit used when measuring temperature.
solid The state of matter with a definite shape and a definite volume.
graduated cylinder A tool used to measure the volume of liquids.
liquid A state of matter without a definite shape, but has a definite volume.
magnet A tool used to attract objects made of iron and certain other metals.
thermometer A tool used to measure the temperature of a substance.
balance A tool used when measuring mass.
milliliter A measure unit of volume for liquids.
gas The state of matter without a definite shape and without a definite volume.
attraction Pulls objects toward each other. Can be an electrical or magnetic force.
farenheit A customary unit used when measuring temperature.
