Sentence Structure

8.L.CSE.1c - Sentence Structure

TermDefinition
Phrase a small group of related words inside a sentence or clause
Clause a group of words that contain a subject and predicate
Independent clause a single sentence that can stand alone
Dependent clause a sentence that must be attached to an independent clause to form a sentence
Simple sentence a single sentence that can stand alone
Compound sentence a sentence made up of two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses
Complex sentence a sentence made up of at least one independent clause and at least one dependent clause
Coordinating conjunctions connections words, phrases, and independent clauses
Subordinating conjunctions connect an independent clause with a dependent clause
