Unit 1 Review

Physical Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
matter anything that has mass and occupies space
Properties definite set of characteristics that define a substance
Physical Property can be measured or observed without producing a new substance
Physical Change change in a physical property
Chemical Change change that produces a new substance
Mixtures two or more substances physically combined
Homogenous Mixtures substance is evenly dispersed throughout
Heterogenous Mixture ,each substance is not uniformly dispersed and easily separated
Pure Substance matter that contains one type of atom or molecule, an element or compound
Elements a substance that is made from ONE type of atom and cannot be broken down
Compounds two or more elements are CHEMICALLY combined (NaCl -salt and H20 -Water)
homogeneous mixture solution
What is matter? Is anything that has mass and takes up space
How do particles move in a solid? They vibrate in place, do not move
How do the particles move in a liquid?, They are still close together, but they can move around each other in all directions.
How do the particles move in a gas? They are very far apart, they have lost of energy and move very fast in all directions. The particles can even leave their container if it is not sealed."
What are some examples of matter that are pure substances? Elements (H,O, C) and Compounds (H2O, NaCl)
What are some examples of Heterogeneous mixtures? cookies, milk, salad, trail mix
What are some of Homogeneous mixtures? lemonade, sweet tea, salt water
Homogenous Mixture It is a mixture that looks like a single pure substance. Actually, it is a uniform mixture of two or more substances.
Conductivity ability of a substance to transfer heat or electrical energy
Ductility ,can be made into wires
Element, a pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout
Luster gentle shining light that is reflected from a surfaceC
Malleability a physical property of an object allowing it to be reshaped with bending or cracking
Metalloids elements whose physical properties are intermediate between metals and nonmetals
Metals elements that are mostly solids at room temperature, have luster, and are good conductors of heat and electricity"
Nonmetals elements that are mostly liquids and gases at room temperature and bad conductors of heat and electricity
Periodic table of elements an organized table of all the chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number
Precipitate, a solid formed due to a chemical reaction of liquids
Rare Earth Elements 17 metallic elements that are important to modern technology because of their magnetic properties

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
