Unit 1 Matter
Investigating Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| gas | A state of matter with no measurable volume or shape; it expands to the shape of the container |
| liquid | A state of matter with a measurable volume but no measurable shape; it takes the shape of the container |
| solid | A state of matter with a measurable volume and shape; it keeps its own shape |
| matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass |
| mass | The amount of matter in an object or substance, measured in grams (g) |
| magnetism | The attraction to a magnet |
| physical property | An observable and/or measurable characteristic of matter |
| physical state | The condition in which matter exists (solid, liquid, or gas) |
| relative density | How certain types of matter behave in water; sink or float |
| temperature | The average amount of thermal energy matter has, measured in degrees Celsius (°C) or degrees Fahrenheit (°F) |
| volume | The amount of space matter takes up, measured in milliliters (mL) or cubic centimeters (cm3) |
| classify | To group things together |
| triple beam balance | A tool to find the mass of an object |
| grams | A unit of measure for amount of mass |
| particle | A small portion of matter. |
| thermometer | A tool to measure hot or cold. |
| non-magnetic | Matter not attracted to a magnet |
| water vapor | A form of matter that is a gas |
| observation | Information using 5 senses. |
| floats | Less dense than water |
| sinks | More dense than water |
| degrees | Measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit |
| evaporation | A liquid changing to a gas |
| condensation | A gas changing to a liquid |
