Investigating Matter

gas A state of matter with no measurable volume or shape; it expands to the shape of the container
liquid A state of matter with a measurable volume but no measurable shape; it takes the shape of the container
solid A state of matter with a measurable volume and shape; it keeps its own shape
matter Anything that takes up space and has mass
mass The amount of matter in an object or substance, measured in grams (g)
magnetism The attraction to a magnet
physical property An observable and/or measurable characteristic of matter
physical state The condition in which matter exists (solid, liquid, or gas)
relative density How certain types of matter behave in water; sink or float
temperature The average amount of thermal energy matter has, measured in degrees Celsius (°C) or degrees Fahrenheit (°F)
volume The amount of space matter takes up, measured in milliliters (mL) or cubic centimeters (cm3)
classify To group things together
triple beam balance A tool to find the mass of an object
grams A unit of measure for amount of mass
particle A small portion of matter.
thermometer A tool to measure hot or cold.
non-magnetic Matter not attracted to a magnet
water vapor A form of matter that is a gas
observation Information using 5 senses.
floats Less dense than water
sinks More dense than water
degrees Measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit
evaporation A liquid changing to a gas
condensation A gas changing to a liquid
