Scientific Method

Scientific Method Steps and Experimental Info!

TermDefinition
Observation Made using the 5 senses. ex. the plant is green, the plant's leaves are 5 cm across
Inference A guess based on the senses. ex. It is hot outside, therefore people must want ice cream
Problem ALWAYS A QUESTION! ex. What happens to my pulse rate if I exercise?
Hypothesis Best guess about what would happen. ALWAYS A SENTENCE. ex. If I exercise, then my pulse rate will increase
Experiment Only change one variable at a time, do multiple trials, take an average
Independent Variable What I CHANGE/MANIPULATE ex. temperature, amount of light
Dependent Variable What I MEASURE ex. how tall plant grows, how large leaves are
Controlled Variable Used for BASELINE/COMPARISON. ex. If I want to know exercise impacts my pulse rate, my CONTROL would be my resting pulse rate.
Constants Any factors kept the same throughout the experiment.
x-axis Where Independent Variable goes
y-axis Where Dependent Variable goes
CER claim, evidence, reasoning. Conclusion to your experiment
Direct Relationship (graph) As one variable increases, the other variable also increases
Indirect Relationship (graph) As one variable increases, the other variable decreases
Theory Big Idea that explains why or how something happens. Backed up by tons of evidence!
Order of steps of scientific theory Observation, Problem, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data, Conclusion, Theory
What does the acronym TACKLE stand for T-title, A-axis, C-connect, K-key, L-labels, E-even scale

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
