SIMPLE SENTENCE FORMULAS SV, SSV, SVV, SSVV
SIMPLE SENTENCE FORMULA EXAMPLES SV - Adrienne loves ice cream. SSV -Francis and John like athletics. SVV - Aili jumps and spins at dance practice. SSVV - Samuel and Max run and jump at PE.
COMPOUND SENTENCE 2 independent clauses joined with a , conjunction or a ;
COMPOUND SENT. FORMULAS & EXAMPLES I,cI or I;I Independent clause, comma, conjunction, Independent clause OR Independent clause, semi colon Independent Clause. Cathy likes gymnastics, and Scarlet likes swimming. Merryn likes gymnastics; Mckaye likes cheerleading.
COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS Coordinating conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses.
MNEUMONIC DEVICE FOR COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
COMPLEX SENTENCE (7th and 8th grade only) sent. contains 1 independent clause & at least 1 dependent (or subordinate) clause. IC: A complete thought that can stand alone as a sentence. EX: Jesus wept. DC: A group of words that has a S & V but cannot stand alone. EX: because Lazarus had died
FRAGMENT An incomplete sentence. Example: Running through the forest.
RUN ON SENTENCE 2 or more independent clauses (sentences) joined without proper punctuation or a connecting word. EX. of what NOT to do I love reading I read every night before bed.
COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE (8th grade only) Sentence contains 2 independent clauses joined with a comma and conjunction or a semicolon and at least 1 dependent clause.
exposition This part of a story describes the setting and characters
rising action This part of the story builds suspense
climax The part of the story where the conflict is resolved, the conflict reaches a peak, the TURNING point of the story
falling action This part of the story provides closure.
resolution the part of the story that is the ending and
