TermDefinition
controlling idea The purpose of an informational text or research paper. the big point when you are writing.
conflict a struggle between opposing forces. EXTERNAL or INTERNAL.
conclude to come to a decision.
convey the author's ability to communicate or express ideas, feelings, or information to the reader through their writing
composition the way you put your thoughts into writing so others can understand your ideas.
infer a guess based on clues
Key idea the important point you find while reading someone else's work
literary devices special tools that writers use to make their writing more interesting. Similes, metaphors, alliteration, foreshadowing, etc.
Metaphor saying one thing is another to show similarity. (Time is a thief.)
Synthesize to take ideas or information from different places and put them together to make something new. puzzle pieces = a picture
suffrage the right to vote in political elections
publicize to share information so that many people know about it.
protest to show that you disagree with something or is unfair, usually by speaking out or taking action
tactic a plan or action you use to reach a goal or solve a problem
predict to use clues or information you already know to make a good guess about what will happen next.
tone the author's attitude or feeling toward the subject that they are writing about
relation the way two or more people, ideas, or things are connected.
Qualities the parts of someone's personality or something's features that make them special or different.
Poetry Elements parts that make up a poem, and give it its special style, sound, and meaning. Rhyme, Rhythm, Imagery, Repetition, Figurative language, etc.
Poetry Structure the way a poem is organized or built. Lines, stanzas, rhyme scheme, meter, form, etc.
Greek & Latin Roots parts of words that come from the language origins and carry meaning to help you figure out the meaning of new words
