Digestive system

TermDefinition
-ectasis means stretching or dilation as in bronchiectasis, the dilation of the bronchial tubes
emesis means vomiting as in hematemesis which means vomiting blood
lysis means destruction, breakdown or separation as in hemolysis which means red blood cells are destroyed
pepsia means digestion as in dyspepsia which means difficult digestion
-phagia means eating or swallowing as in dysphagia which means difficult swallowing
-plasty means surgical repair as in rhinoplasty which means surgical repair of the nose
ptysis means spitting as in hemoptysis which means spitting blood
rrhagia or -rrhage means bursting forth of blood as in hemorrhage which means blood burst
-spasm means sudden, involuntary contraction of muscles as in neurospasm which means contraction of the nerve muscles
-tripsy means to crush as in lithotripsy, the crushing of stones
