Noun suffixes

TermDefinition
algia means pain as in arthralgia meaning joint pain
cele hernia as in cystocele which is a hernia of the urinary bladder
centesis is a surgical puncture to remove fluid for analysis as in thoracentesis which is a surgical puncture of the thorac or chest region
dynia means pain as in mastodynia which is pain in the breast
ectomy means excision, removal or resection as in mastectomy which is the removal of a breast
genesis means condition of producing, or forming, as in carcinogenesis which is the production or origin of cancer
gram means record as in myelogram which is a record of the spinal cord
graphy means process of recording as in radiography which is a process of recording utilizing radiation
itis means inflammation as in arthritis which is inflammation of the joints
logy is the study of as in ophthalmology which is the study of the eye
malacia is softening as in osteomalacia known as softening of the bones
megaly is enlargement, as in acromegaly which is enlargement of the extremities
oma means tumor, mass or collection as in myoma which is tumor of the muscle
opsy is to view as in necropsy which is to view a dead body for examination
osis means condition which is usually abnormal as in hydronephrosis which is an abnormal condition of water on the kidney
pathy is a disease condition cardiomyopathy which is a disease condition of the heart muscle
penia means deficiency as in leukopenia which is a deficiency of white blood cells
sclerosi means hardening as in arteriosclerosis which is hardening of the arteries
scopy is the process of visual examination as in laparoscopy which is a visual examination of the abdomen
stomy is an opening to form a mouth or stoma as in colostomy which is an external opening created surgically of the colon or large intestine
