Wors Root The root word is the foundation of the word and it can stand alone, be used with a prefix or suffix or combined with other root words. gastr/ic - gastr is the root meaning stomach
Suffix The suffix is the word ending. It modifies the root word and makes it more specific. It can stand alone or be used with a root word. gastr/itis -itis is the suffix and means inflammation gastr/ic -ic is the suffix and it means pertaining to
Prefix The prefix is the word beginning. It modifies the root word and makes it more specific. It cannot stand alone. epi/gastr/ic -epi is the prefix and it means above or upon trans/gastr/ic -trans is the prefix and it means across
Combining vowel A vowel which is usually "o" linking the root to the suffix or to another root. Sometimes "i" and "u" are used. mamm/o/gram -mamm is the root word meaning breast gram is the suffix meaning record o is the combining vowel
Combining form The combination of a root word with the combining vowel. cardi/o/gram cardi is the combining form and it means heart
