| Term | Definition |

| volume | a measure of how much space an object takes up |
| mass | the amount of material in an object, not the same as weight. |
| matter | anything that has mass and take up space/has volume |
| physical property | a characteristic of matter that can be observed, measured, or tested (volume, mass, texture and more) |
| mixture | a physical combination of two or more substances that are blended together WITHOUT forming new substances, and can be separated. |
| texture | the feel of something when you touch it (rough, smooth, fuzzy) |
| hardness | how resistant something is to being scratched |
| physical change | the change of somethings size, shape or state (solid, liquid, gas) |
| substance | a specific kind of matter |
| chemical change | a change that results in a new or different substance, also known as a chemical reaction & cannot be reversed (rust, rotting fruit, cooking an egg) |
| dissolve | when a substance completely breaks down when mixed in water, this is a physical change and does not create a new substance. |
| states of matter | a property of matter, the state that matter can be in - solid, liquid or gas |
| gas | has no definite shape or volume, fills all the space available |
| solid | has definite shape and volume |
| liquid | has definite volume, not shape. it takes the shape of its container. |
| variable | a factor that can be changed in an experiment, |
