| Term | Definition |

| Physical dependence/Habituation | Altered physiological state produced by repeated administration of a drug which necessitates continued administration to prevent withdrawal symptoms |
| Tolerance | After repeated administration of a given dose of drug, the drug produces a decrease in effect where larger doses are necessary to produce the desired effect |
| Drug Intolerance | Refers to an unusually low threshold for experiencing a drug side effect. It is not the same as an allergy |
| Drug sensitivity | The body reacts more strongly or negatively than expected, even with normal doses |
| Intolerance | Drowsiness from antihistamines |
| Allergy | Hives or anaphylaxis from penicillin |
| Side Effect | Mild headache from medication |
| Allergy | Can be life-threatening |
| Side Effect | Expected, but usually tolerable |
| Intolerance | Exaggerated response to normal side effects |
