absorption is the time it takes for a drug to work after it has been administered; the rate at which the drug passes from the intestines into the bloodstream
active ingredient is the chemical in a medication that is known or believe to have a therapeutic effect
acute refers to a disease or illness with a sudden onset and a short duration
additive is a substance added to a liquid solution that is intended for IV use
admixture is a substance produced by mixing two or more substances
adverse reaction denotes an unwanted or unexpected side effect or a reaction to a medication; it may also result from an interaction among two or more medication
aerosol a medication dosage from that uses a gaseous substance consisting of fine liquid or solid particles
alcoholic a solution that contains only alcohol as the dissolving agent
allergen a substance, like pollen, that causes an allergy
allergic reaction denotes sensitivity to a specific substance that is absorbed through the skin, inhaled into the lungs, swallowed, or injected
allergy a sensitivity of the immune system to a chemical or drug; an allergy causes symptoms ranging from rashes to more severe symptoms such as irregular breathing
amphetamines substances that are frequently abused as stimulant medications; they can be used to treat the medical conditions of narcolepsy and eating disorders
analeptic refers to a substance that stimulates the central nervous system
analgesic refers to a substance used to relieve acute or chronic pain
anaphylactic shock is hypersensitivity reaction to a substance
anesthetic refers to relief of pain by the process of interfering with the nerve transmission alerting the brain of pain
angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure by blocking the enzyme that activates angiotensin-a natural substance that narrows the blood vessels and thereby raises blood pressure
anorectic refers to a substance that suppresses the appetite
antacid is a substance that relieves high acid levels in the gastric (stomach) area
antagonist refers to a substance that opposes the action of another drug or substance
antianxiety describes substance that reduce or relieve anxiety
antibiotic a substance used to kill or stop the growth of bacteria in the body
antibody is a protein produced by the immune system to respond to foreign substances in the body
anticholinergic refers to a substance that inhibits hypersecretion and gastrointestinal motility
anticoagulant refers to a substance that stops blood clotting (also known as blood thinner)
anticonvulsant refers to a substance that stops brain nerve firing to suppress convulsive seizures
antidepressant a substance that helps maintain proper hormone balance levels to decrease depressive moods
antidiarrheal relieves and decreases gastrointestinal activity that produces diarrhea
antidote is a substance or remedy that counteracts the effects of a poisoning agent
antiemetic is a substance that relieves nausea and vomiting
antiflatulent refers to a substance that relieves the pressure of excess intestinal gas
antifungal refers to a substance that kills fungi growing in or on the body
antigen is a substance that stimulates the body to produce antibodies
antihistamine refers to a substance that stops the effects of histamine release, which causes sneezing, watery eyes and congestion
antihypertensive refers to a substance that works to lower blood pressure
anti-inflammatory is a substance that reduces and relieves inflammation
antineoplastic refers to a substance that is used to kill cancer cells
antioxidants are chemical substances that reduce or prevent oxidation (chemical binding of oxygen with other chemicals or molecules)
antiplatelets are substances that reduce the ability of platelets to stick together and form a clot
antipruitic denotes a substance that relieves itching
antipsychotics are substance that blocks and inhibit the stimulatory actions of dopamine
antipyretic refers to a substance that relieves and lowers high fever
antiseptic is an agent that is capable of preventing infection by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms
antispasmodics relieve stomach muscle spasms
antitussives relieves sevre cough
antiviral refers to drugs that fight viral infection in the body
aqueous means "containing water"
aspetic techniques are used to get rid of bacteria and other microorganisms and thus protect against infection
astringent refers to a substance that stops secretions or controls bleeding
auxiliary labels are placed on the medication package to provide information and instructions for use
bacteriocide is an agent that kills bacteria
bacteriostat is an agent that inhibits bacterial growth
beta-blockers are substance used in the treatment of hypertension, angina, arrhythmia, and cardiomypathy; they may also be used to minimize the possibility of sudden death after a heart attack
binding agent is a substance that holds all the ingredients in a tablet together
bioequivalence describes a substance acting on the body with the same strength and similar bioavailability as the same dosage of another substance
blood sugar level is the measure of glucose (sugar) level in the bloodstream
brand name is the proprietary name of a drug exclusive to a manufacturer for selling and distributing purposes
bronchodilator is a substance that relaxes the bronchial smooth muscles in the respiratory system
buccal tablet is a tablet that is dissolved in the lining of the cheek instead of being swallowed whole
bulk compounding is the process of compounding large quantities of a substance for dispensing or distributing
bulk manufacturing is the process of manufacturing large quantities of a substance for sale and distribution
bulking agent is a chemical substance required to produce a certain desired result
calcium-channel blockers are substances used to treat and reduce hypertension (high blood pressure) and disorders that affect the blood supply to the heart; also used in the treatment of irregular heartbeat
capsule is a solid dosage form of a medication, usually made of gelatin, which surrounds amd holds fine parties of a solid or liquid
chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer using specific chemical agents or drugs
chewable tablets are meant to be chewed instead of swallowed whole
chronic refers to a disease or illness that has a long duration (e.g. lifetime)
clinical trials are scientific experiments that test the effect of a drug on human test patients; required by the FDA for approval of a new medication
communicable refers to a disease or illness that can be transmitted to another person
compound refers to a substance made from a combination of two or more substances
contagious refers to the time period when an infectious person can transmit disease to another person through direct ir indirect contact
contraception is the process of preventing conception or impregnation
contraceptive refers to any device, drug, or chemical agent that prevents contraception
contraindication is an aspect of a patients condition that does not fit with the proposed treatment
controlled release medications are released and metabolized over a period of time in the body
controlled substance refers to a drug with a high potential for abuse; manufacturing and distribution of these substances are regulated by the federal government to limit abuse and harm
corticosteroid are substance used to prevent minor asthma attacks or to treat severe attacks
cream is a semisolid dosage form a medication, usually applied externally to soothe, lubricate, or protect
cure is the effective treatment of a disease or illness, leading to elimination of all symptoms
