English 10 Lit Terms

TermDefinition
Allusion a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art (Bible, Myths)
Alliteration the repetition of initial consonant sounds – used typically in poetry
Characterization techniques a writer uses to create and develop a character
Conflict a struggle between two opposing forces
Diction word choice/tone created by the author
Figurative Language language that has meaning beyond the literal meaning
Flashback interruption of the chronological (time) order to present something from the past
Foreshadowing important hints that an author provides to prepare the reader for what is to come and help the reader anticipate the outcome
Hyperbole specific words and phrases that exaggerate the statement in order to produce a grander, more noticeable effect
Imagery words or phrases that appeal to the readers five senses; the painting of a mental picture
Irony an unexpected event, amusing contradictions or contrasts
Metaphor comparison of two different objects that have commonalities; does not use “like” or “as”
Mood evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions. The attitude of the reader towards the subject
Personification when an inanimate/nonliving object is given or described as exhibiting human qualities
Point of View perspective from which the story is told
Repetition when an author repeats the same words or phrases a few times in order to emphasize an idea's importance
Setting the place and time frame in which a story takes place
Simile a comparison of two unlike objects that use “like” or “as”
Symbol person, place, or thing that represents something beyond itself
Theme the message about life or human nature that is the “focus” in the story that the writer tells
Tone the perspective or attitude that the author adopts with regards to a specific character or idea
Connotation The positive, negative, or neutral feeling that a word implies
Denotation The dictionary definition of a word
