Practicing Types of Figurative Language all incoming ninth graders should know.

| Simile | A comparison of two unlike things using like or as. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as. |
| Hyperbole | an obvious exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally. |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to nonhuman things. |
| Onomatopoeia | Sound words/ words that describe sounds |
| Alliteration | The repetition of the same beginning sound of words in a sentence. |
| Idiom | Common phrases that people use that is different from its literal meaning. |
| Proverb | A saying that contains advice or a truth. |
| Allusion | A word or phrase that hints at something or someone well known. |
| Pun | A play on words that uses multiple meanings. |
| Oxymoron | Describing two opposite ideas to create a description of something. |
| Symbolism | When one object or concept stands in for another one. |
