Figurative Language

Practicing Types of Figurative Language all incoming ninth graders should know.

TermDefinition
Simile A comparison of two unlike things using like or as.
Metaphor A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as.
Hyperbole an obvious exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally.
Personification Giving human qualities to nonhuman things.
Onomatopoeia Sound words/ words that describe sounds
Alliteration The repetition of the same beginning sound of words in a sentence.
Idiom Common phrases that people use that is different from its literal meaning.
Proverb A saying that contains advice or a truth.
Allusion A word or phrase that hints at something or someone well known.
Pun A play on words that uses multiple meanings.
Oxymoron Describing two opposite ideas to create a description of something.
Symbolism When one object or concept stands in for another one.
