Image Quality

QuestionAnswer
What is the essential outcome of the Compton effect? Scatter radiation
What effect increases as radiation increases? Compton scatter
What interaction occurs when the photon is absorbed by the atom? Photoelectric effect
What tool is used in radiographic exams of high kVp to avoid compton scatter? Grid
What interaction happens in the tube vs body? Electron interaction in the tube; Photon interaction in the body
What is the definition of transmission? Photon reaches the Ir without interaction in the body due to the intensity of the energy
What is the definition of attenuation? the reduction in the intensity or number of X-ray photons as they pass through a material, like the human body; how much a material "stops" or weakens the X-ray beam.
Increased kVp increases what other effect? Compton Scatter and transmission
Decreased kVp decreases what other effect? Photoelectric effect
What is the main technical factor that controls contrast (gray scale)? kVp
What is the primary controlling factor of quantity of x-ray to hit the IR? mAs
How does the increase of kVp effect mAs? Increasing kVp by 15% increases mAs (quantity) of x-rays by 50%
What adjustments need to be made to kVp when using a higher level of grid ratio ? Increase in kVp
What is the purpose of tube filtration? Filter out low level (non-useful) x-rays
What is spatial resolution? Details of the image (blurring or unsharpness of quality of image)
What is always minimized but never decreased in terms of spatial resolution and distortion? OID
What controls optical Density or Receptor Exposure? Main Controlling Factor is mAs
Which technical factor is adjusted to push x-ray beams through tissue to image receptor? kVp
What is bit depth? the amount of different types of grays that can be displayed; which increases contrast resolution
What 2 things produce noise? Quantum mottling (grainy)(too few xrays hitting receptor),, Scatter (adding unwanted exposure
What are the two factors that affect magnification/ SID and OID, making images look longer/shorter (distortion)
What is the relationship between kVP and contrast scales ? Increased kVP gives you long scale (low contrast) , Decreased kVP gives you low scale (high contrast)
How does pixel size effect resolution? Smaller the pixels ,the more detail and greater scale
How does bit depth effect resolution? The increase in bit depth, the better the image
What is the definition of brightness? the measurement of the luminance of an area in a radiographic image displayed on a monitor.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
