Rad Protection Ch.16

Radiosotopes & Radiation Protection

QuestionAnswer
Isotopes Atoms with the same number of protons but different neutrons.
Some are unstable and that is referred to ______________. Radioisotopes.
Iodine 131 - Oral tablet for thyroid cancer. - In the hospital these patients have to have lead shields to protect the personnel. - Only trained oncology nurses and nuclear medicine personnel in room.
IODINE - 125 - For radiation safety, limit close contact with small children and pregnant women for 6 months after implant.
IODINE - 125: - Unstable radioactive isotope. Used in seed form for prostate glands. - Delivers 145 Gy to at least 90% of the prostate's volume, close to urethra, bladder and rectal wall. Implanted in OR.
Handling and Disposal of Radioactive Materials: - Must follow State and Federal regulations. - Wear gloves. - Wear dosimeters. - Residual isotope returned to shielded container. - Must be held for a period of 10 half-lives.
IODINE - 123 Concentrates in the thyroid gland.
TECHNETIUM - 99M Most common very versatile can be mixed with a lot of compounds to evaluate circulatory, spleen, bone heart disorders.
_______________ uses radioisotopes to diagnose organ function, detect cancer and treat some disease. Nuclear medicine.
______ does not use pair production but used annihilation radiation. PET/CT.
FLUORINE - 18 - This can reveal locations the cells are getting what they need. - With PET/CT they can find out detailed information about the location and determine size and growths of the areas.
FLUORINE - 18: - Examines metabolic processes of the body. - Cancer cells thrive on sugar for energy to multiply and spread.
Contamination A radioactive dispersal device or dirty bomb. Remove clothing and take a shower. Detector checked radiation safety officer will assess.
PET - Results in the production of high energy radiation. - Up to 2 inches of lead required for protection. - The patient is the radiation emitter. - Suites must be designed to protect personnel and the public.
_________ is not worth the risk Cleanup.
Surface contamination = Use infection control procedures.
PET considerations Radiation safety shielding considerations for PET/CT scanners.
RADIATION EMERGENCIES: THE USE OF RADIATION AS A TERRORIST WEAPON - CONTAMINATION. - CLEANUP OF A CONTAMINATED URBAN AREA. - MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF PERSONS SUFFERING FROM RADIATION BIOEFFECTS.
