TermDefinition
ikigai A Japanese word that means “a reason for being.” It’s about finding the balance between what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.
mission statement A short sentence or paragraph that explains what’s most important to you and what you hope to do with your life or work.
passion Something you really love doing and care deeply about.
profession A type of job that usually requires special training or education, like being a teacher, lawyer, or nurse.
mission A personal goal or purpose that guides what you do in life.
vocation Work that you feel called to do—it may feel meaningful or like it’s your life’s purpose.
personal (core) values The most important beliefs and ideas that guide your actions and decisions, like honesty, kindness, or hard work.
career cluster A group of jobs and industries that are related by skills or interests, such as health science, business, or the arts.
hobby Something you enjoy doing in your free time, like drawing, playing sports, or baking.
interest Something you’re curious about or enjoy learning or talking about.
salary A set amount of money you earn each year for doing a job, no matter how many hours you work.
hourly A type of pay where you earn a certain amount of money for each hour you work.
doctorate The highest level of college degree, usually earned after many years of study beyond a bachelor’s or master’s degree (examples: Ph.D., M.D.).
master's A college degree earned after a bachelor’s degree. It usually takes 1–2 more years of study.
bachelor's A college degree you usually earn after about 4 years of study.
associate A college degree you can earn in about 2 years, often from a community college.
professional degree A college degree that prepares you for a specific job, like a doctor, dentist, or lawyer. These usually require completing college and extra years of specialized training.
