| Term | Definition |

| Density (relative to various fluids) | the ability of a material (not an object) to sink or float in a fluid |
| Fluids | substances that have an indefinite shape, like liquids and gases |
| Gas | a state of matter in which the substance expands to take both the shape and volume of its container |
| Heterogenous mixture | a mixture tha t is not uniform throughout |
| Homogeneous mixture | a mixture that is uniform throughout |
| Kinetic energy | energy of objects in motion |
| Liquid | a state of matter in which the substance takes the shape of the container and has an unchanged volume when poured from one container to another |
| Pure substance | samples of matter that are made up of the same particles |
| Solid | a state of matter in which the substance has a set shape and size |
| Volume | the amount of space that a substance or object takes up |
