Functions of Skeletal System Supports the body, protects organs, allows movements, stores minerals (like calcium) and produces blood cells in the bone marrow.
How many bones does a typical adult have? What are Axial and Appendicular Divisions? 206 bones in typical adult, Axial has skull, vertebrae & ribs. Appendicular has limbs and girdles.
Function of Integumentary System Protects the body, helps regulate temperature, allows sensory reception and makes vitamin D.
Structure of Integumentary System? Skin - Epidermis & Dermis, hair, nails sweat glands and sebaceous glands.
What is Anterior? Posterior? Anterior - front of the body; Posterior - back of the body
What is Superior? Inferior? Superior - above or towards the head (THINK sUPerior), Inferior - towards the feet
Definition of Homeostasis? Body's ability to maintain stable internal environment despite external changes.
Feedback mechanisms? Negative feedback - reduces the original stimulus (like sweating to cool downl; Positive feed back - amplifies the stimulus (like contractions in childbirth)
3 types of Cartilage Hyaline - Flexible (ends of bones), Elastic - Very flexible (ear) Fibrocartilage - strong, shock absorber (intervetebral discs & knees)
Function of Cartilage Supports soft tissue, reduces friction at joints, absorbs shock.
Osteoblasts Bone building cells that secrete the bone matrix
Osteoclast Bone breaking cells that resorb or break down bone
Osteocytes Mature bone cells. Maintains bone matrix and communicates with other bone cells
Bone types Compact bone - dense & strong; Spongy - lighter, porous & holds red marrow (Ends of long bones)
Red Marrow? Yellow Marrow? Red Marrow makes blood cells (HEMATOPOIESIS)l; Yellow Marrow stores fat & found in the shaft of long bones
