Evolution Vocab

TermDefinition
Species A group of living organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring in nature
Evolution The change in the characteristics of a species over time
Natural Selection The process by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring
Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its specific environment
Common ancestors Organisms from which two or more different species have evolved
Branching tree diagram A visual representation of how species are related through evolution, resembling a tree with branches
Overproduction
Competition (struggle for existence) The competition between organisms for limited resources in the environment (food, shelter, etc.)
Survival of the Fittest (selection) The idea that organisms with traits best suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce
"Fitness" of a species The species with the traits better adpted to their environment are better able survive and reproduce than other species

Embryological Development The process by which an embryo develops from a single cell to a complex organism ( from fertilized egg to brith)
Homologous structures Body parts that have the same basic structure but different functions in various species due to their environments.
Genetic Evidence
LUCA - Last Universal Common Ancestor The most recent common ancestor of all current life on Earth (most likely a single celled organims)
Geologic time scale A system of chronological dating that covers the last 4.6 billion years of life on earth
Relative dating Determining the age of a fossil or rock layer in relation to other layers (older vs. younger)
Absolute Dating Determining the actual age of a fossil or rock using radioactive decay of elements (numerical age)
