Terms and Definitions for Literary Texts

| chronological order | events in the plot are told in the sequence or in the order in which they happened in time |
| parallel plot | a story in which multiple plot lines take place at the same time |
| structure | how the events in a story are organized |
| plot | the events that take place in the story |
| flashback | a scene that interrupts the main story to tell about something that happened earlier |
| pacing | the rate or speed at which a story unfolds |
| tension | an anxious, worried, or curious feeling that gets the reader to find out what happens next in the story |
| genre | specific categories in literature |
| graphic novel | a text in a long comic-book format that combines words and images to tell a full length story |
| complex (dynamic, round) character | a character with multiple qualities, traits, and motivations who changes and grows over the course of the story |
| static (flat) character | does not grow or change, purpose is to help drive the plot forward |
| first person point of view | told by a narrator who is a character in the story and tells the story, using the pronouns I and me |
| third person limited point of view | told by a narrator who is not a character in the story and knows only somethings about one character, tells the story using pronouns they, them she, he, it |
| third person omniscient point of view | told by a narrator who is not a character in the story and knows all things about all the characters, tells the story using pronouns they, them she, he, it |
| verbal irony | what is actually meant is the opposite or very different that what is said |
| situational irony | What actually happens is the opposite or completely different than what is expected |
| dramatic irony | The reader or listener knows something that the characters do not. |
| satire | the use of humor, irony, or exaggeration to ridicule human nature or society |
| tone | the attitude an author shows toward their subject |
| second person point of view | told by a narrator who is not in the story, but tells the story to the reader, using the pronoun you |
| voice | the opinion, tone, and attitude of an author expressed through the use of language |
