Terms and Definitions for Clauses and Sentence Types

| clause | a group of words that includes both a subject and a verb |
| dependent clause | a clause that does not function as a complete sentence |
| independent clause | a clause that functions as a complete sentence |
| subordinating conjunction | a connecting word or phrase that introduces a dependent clause |
| simple sentence | a sentence that contains only one independent clause |
| compound sentence | a sentence that contains at least two independent clauses |
| complex sentence | a sentence that contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses |
| compound-complex sentence | s sentence that contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause |
| adverbial clause | a clause that modifies the verb in an independent clause |
| nonrestrictive clause | a relative clause that is not essential to meaning |
| noun clause | a clause that acts like a noun |
| relative clause | a clause that modifies a noun in the independent clause |
| restrictive clause | a relative clause that is essential to the meaning of the sentence |
| function of a noun clause | subject of a sentence, object of a verb, subject complement, object of a preposition, indirect object |
| antecedent | the word or phrase that a pronoun refers to |
| participial phrase | a phrase that begins with a participle and acts like an adjective |
| prepositional phrase | a preposition followed by its object and the object's modifiers |
| semicolon (;) | This comes between two independent clause when no coordinating junction is used; the second independent clause will not start with a capital letter unless the first word of it is a proper noun. |
| colon(:) | This is often used to introduce a list or quotation or to provide clarification for the information immediately coming before it. |
