Unit X - Waves - Level 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Compression | The part of a longitudinal wave where the density of the particles is the biggest |
| Rarefaction | The part of a longitudinal wave where the density of the particles is the smallest |
| Diffraction | A wave spreading out after it passes through an opening or around an edge |
| Refraction | A wave bending after entering a new medium |
| Reflection | Occurs when a wave bounces off a hard boundary |
| Constructive Interference | When two waves meet, they can be added together if they are “in-phase” if the high points or low points are matched up |
| Destructive Interference | When two waves meet, they can cancel each other out if they are “out of phase”, high and low points are not matched up. |
| Mechanical Wave | Waves that require a medium |
| Electromagnetic Wave | Waves that do not require a medium |
