TermDefinition
Controlled Experiment in an experiment in which everything is held constant (the same) except for one thing (independent variable).
Systematic Observation has no independent variable, only observation.
Field Study investigation in the natural habitat of the organism.
Model a representation of something complicated with benefits and limitations.
Control group provides a baseline to determine how the other things tested performed (Water = H2O).
Variable in a controlled experiment, any factor that can be changed.
Constant/Control Variable All variables that are kept the same to make it fair and valid.
Repetition When an investigation is repeated by the same person the same way.
Replication when another person does the experiment the same way.
Valid to be a fair test of something and measure what it supposed to measure.
Independent Variable (input) What I change-the one factor that is manipulated (changed) to test its effect to cause change on another factor [Cause].
Dependent Variable (output) Data I measure for success- the factor that changes as a result of the independent variable[Effect].
Data/Evidence measurements or descriptions from experiments or investigations.
Empirical Evidence Data.
Scientific Theory explains how something works.
Scientific Law explains what happens.
Qualitative Observation An observation that collects data using your senses - see, smell, touch, taste, hear. (does not involve numbers or measurements).
Quantitative Observation an observation that involves measurements and numbers.
