A Walk in the Park

TermDefinition
Ecosystem An area where living things interact with each other and the nonliving things in the environment.
interdependent a relationship where organism relies upon another for its survival.
organism an entire living thing that carries out all the basic life functions.
park an area of land (with plants and animals) that is set aside for the purpose of relaxation, enjoyment and often the protection of the living things within that area.
Flower The part of the plant that makes fruit with one or more seeds.

artery A blood vessel (tube) that takes blood from the heart to parts of the body.
Body system a group of different structures working together to do a certain job in an animal or human body. For example, the circulatory system.
Brain A major organ that controls the nervous system.
Capillary A thin blood vessel.
Circulatory System The system of the body that brings oxygen and food to all parts of the body and takes wastes away. This system includes the heart, arteries, veins, capillaries and blood.

Cornea The curved, clear front of the eye
Digestive System The system of the body that breaks down food into tiny particles.
Heart A pump that pushes blood to all parts of the body and the lungs.
Iris The colored part of the eye.
Joint A place where bones meet. Where the body is able to move.
Leaf A flat structure of a plant where food is made for the plant. Air, sunlight and water are used to make the food.
Lens Curved structure within the eye that focuses light onto the sense receptors at the back of the eye.
Ligament A structure that connects
Limb Arm or leg of a person or a four-legged animal.
Motor Nerve Takes messages from the brain or spinal cord to the muscles.
Muscles Elastic Tissue that can contract (get shorter) and expand (get longer)
Nerve A structure in the nervous system that carries messages.
Phloem A system of tubes that takes food from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
Pupil The opening in the center of the iris.
Receptor A structure inside a sense organ that is simulated by incoming information.
Retina Layer at the back of the eyeball that contains the sense receptors (light receptors)
Root the part of the plant that anchors it to the ground and takes in water.
Seed A baby plant with a protective cover and food for germination.
Sensory nerve Takes messages from the sense receptors to the brain or spinal cord .
Skeleton A structure of bones inside the bodes of animals with backbones
Sound waves Patterns made as sound energy travels
Spinal cord A column of nerves that runs from the base of the brain down the back. The spinal cord is inside the backbone.
Stem The part of the plant that holds up the leaves and carries water and other materials between the roots.
Symmetry A sameness in size or form of a part on opposite sides of a line.
System A group of related structures that work together to make up a whole.
Tendon A structure that connects a muscle to a bone.
Vein (in plants) Where xylem and phloem are bundled together in the plant.
Vein (in animals) A blood vessel (tube) that takes blood from parts of the body back to the heart.
Xylem A system of tubes in a plant that takes water from the roots to the leaves.
