Cells & Diffusion

TermDefinition
Diffusion Movement of Molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
Osmosis Movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water
Permeable Allows any molecules to diffuse across the membrane
semi - Permeable Allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane
non - Permeable Allows no molecules to diffuse across the membrane
Nucleus - Both Controls all activities of the cell growth & Reproduction
Cell Membrane - Both - Allows certain molecules to go in or out of cells - Molecules diffuse in or out of a cell - Made up of 2 phosphorous layers interconnected
cell wall - plant Support and protects the cell and does not allow molecules in or out
Chromosomes - Both Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum - Both Produces and stores protein
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum - Both Produces and Stores fat & Oil
Golgi Bodies - Both Modifies & packages proteins from the Rough E.R with enzymes
Ribosomes- Both Helps the Rough E.R to make protein and is attached to the Rough E.R
Centrioles - Animal - Helps with cell division (Mitosis) - Spindle fibers come from Here
Mitochondria - Both Converts sugar into energy for the cell
Cytoplasm - Both Fluid in the cell allows organelles to move around
Vacuole- Both - Stores water, minerals & vitamins - Much bigger in plant cells
Lysosomes - Animal - Breaks down food - Invading Bacteria - old/damaged organelles
Chloroplasts - Plant - use sunlight to make its own food -Photosynthesis -CO2 + H2O + light -> Sugar + O2

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
