Cells & Diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | acts as a brain/controls all functions and activities (found in both plant and animal cells) |
| cell membrane | allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell. made up of 2 phosphorous layers interconnected molecules pass in or out of the cell (found in both) |
| cell wall | supports and protects the cell; does not allow anything to go pass it (only in plant cell) |
| chromosomes | proteins that contain DNA, which has coded info for making molecules |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | stores and produces proteins (found in both) |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | stores and produces oils and fats (found in both) |
| golgi bodies | modifies and packages proteins from the rough endoplasmic reticulum (found in both) |
| ribosomes | helps rough endoplasmic reticulum make proteins, which is why it is attached to the rough E.R (found in both) |
| centrioles | Helps with cell division/spindle fibres come from here (only in animal cell) |
| Mitochondria | converts sugar into energy for the cell to move around (found in both) |
| vacuole | stores waters and minerals (much bigger in plant cell) (found in both) |
| lysosomes | breaks down: food, invading bacteria, old/damaged organelles (only in animal cell) |
| chloroplasts | uses sunlight to make its own food: photosynthesis (C02 + H20 +light -> sugar + 02) (only found in plant cell) |
| diffusion | movement of molecules from an area of high concentration an area of low concentration |
| osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration |
| permeable | allows all molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| semi-permeable | allows some molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell membrane) |
| non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell wall) |
