science vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| amplitude | the distance from rest to crest or rest to trough. The larger the amplitude of a wave the more energy the wave has. |
| compression | to push something together (like springs on a slinky in longitudinal wave demo) |
| crest | high point of a wave |
| frequency | the number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time. The rate of something that repeats over an over. |
| KE | the energy of motion |
| longitudinal wave | this is a wave that moves a medium parallel (in the direction) to the direction the wave is traveling (ex - slinky when pushing directly into it) |
| node | zero amplitude. The point where the wave crosses its resting point |
| pulse | short bursts that travel as a wave |
| reflection | the bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface it can't pass through |
| transverse wave | a wave that moves the medium in a direction perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling (ex - slinky moving the slinky left to right as person holds the other end) |
| trough | low point of a wave |
| velocity | speed in a given direction (ex - 50 mph north) |
| wave | a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another |
| wavelength | the distance from crest to crest or trough to trough of a wave |
