drugs affecting autonomic nervous system
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Acetylcholine(Ach) | primary neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system; also present at somatic neuromuscular junctions and at sympathetic preganglionic nerves |
| Acetycholinesterase (AchE) | enzyme that degrades acetycholine within the synaptic cleft, enhancing effects of the neurotransmitter |
| Adrenergic | the receptors at the ends of postganglionic sympathetic neurons are called adrenergic. Adrenergic receptors are two basic types, alpha receptors and beta receptors |
| Adrenergic antagonist | drug that blocks the actions of the sympathetic nervous system |
| alpha receptor | type of subrecptor found in the sympathetic nervous system |
| Anticholinergic | drug that blocks the actions of the parasympathetic nervous system |
| autonomic nervous system | portion of the peripheral nervous system that governs involuntary actions of the smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands |
| beta receptors | type of subrecptor found in the sympathtic nervous system |
| catecholamines | class of agents secreted in response to stress that include epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine |
| central nervous system | divison of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord |
| cholinergic | relating to nerves that release acetycholine |
| fight or flight response | characteristic set of signs and symptoms produced when the sympathtic nervous system is activated |
| ganglionic synapse | as action potential travels along the first nerve, it encounters the first synapse, or junture. because this connection occurs outside the CNS, it is called the ganglionic synapse |
| monoamine oxidase (MAO) | enzyme that destroys norepinephrine in the nerve terminal |
| muscarinic | type of cholinergic receptor found in the smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands |
| myasthenia gravis | motor disorder caused by a destruction of nicotine receptors on skeletal muscles and characterized by profound muscular fatigue |
| nicotinic | type of chollinergic receptor found in the ganglia of both the sympathetic and parasympathtic nervous system |
| norepinephrine | primary nerotransmitter in the sympathtic nervous system |
| parasympathtic nervous system | portion of the autonomic nervous system that is active during periods of rest and that results in the rest of relaxation response |
| parasypathomimetics | drug that mimics the actions of the parasympathic nervous system |
| peripheral nervous system | divison of the nervous system containing all nervous tissue outside the CNS, including the auntonomic nervous system |
| preganglionic neuron | the nerve carrying the impulse exiting the spinal cord is called the preganglionic neuron |
| postganglionic neuron | the nerve on the other side of the ganglionic synapse, waiting to recieve the impulse |
| rest and digest response | signs and symptoms produced when the parasympathetic nervous system is activated |
| somatic nervous system | nerve divison that provides voluntary control over skeletal muscle |
| sympathtic nervous system | portion of the autonomic system that is active during periods of stress and results in the fight or flight resonse |
| sympatholytic | another name for adrenergic antagonists |
| sympathomimetic | stimualtes sympathetic nervous system; they produce classic symptoms of fight or flight response |
| synapse | junction between two neurons consisting of a presynaptic nerve, a synaptic cleft, and a postsynaptic nerve |
| synaptic transmission | process by which a nerotransmitter reaches reseptors to regenerate the action potential |
