what is prejudice? refers to a prejudging fixed attitude
what is discrimination? an actual behavior that is taken by an individual that is unfavorable towards a person
what is stereotype? applying a common label or a set of characteristics to all members of a certain category
what is stereotype threat? fear that one will be viewed/treated in a way consistent with a negative stereotype - tends to have an immediate negative effect on performance
what is symbolic interactionism? we have prejudice + inequality because of labels
what is selective perception? when labels lead us to see certain things but blind us to other things
what is the self-fulfilling prophecy? if we treat people differently we might get different results
what is the black vs white black is seen as negative while white is seen as positive
what does language mean in our society? language in our society can perpetuate male dominance by trivializing, sexualizing or ignoring women.
what is socialization? we may learn prejudice attitudes/discriminatory behaviors during our socialization
what is the frustration/scape goat theory? when the cause of our frustration is intimidating or unknown, we often redirect our hostility.
what are authoritarian personalities? dismissive to authority and ambiguity disturbs them
what is in group bias? self-serving bias at the group/societal category level. can also lead us to commit the fundamental attribution error towards outgroups
what is spontaneous categorization? an easy and efficient way for our brains to rely on stereotypes
what is out group homogeneity effect? the perception of out group member as more similar to one another than in group members
what is the conflict theory / group conflict theory? the idea that society is composed of groups / social categories that engage in fierce competition over scarce resources, and once a group is at the top of the social ladder they want to stay up there.
what is institutional discrimination/racism/gender discrimination? the established, customary ways society's institutions operate to keep those in minority statuses subordinate / in a subordinate social position
